Das Projekt Falaise des italienischen, aus Matteo Guarnello und Lorenzo Pompili bestehenden Duos ist erstmals im April 2015 in Erscheinung getreten. Das Debütalbum „As Time Goes By“, möglicherweise durch den gleichnamigen Musical-Song im Film „Casablanca“ inspiriert, war damals auf Bandcamp (wie etliche Musik) für ’n Appel und ’n Ei zu haben. Unglaublich, dass sich an dieser Tatsache bis heute nichts geändert hat, wird dem Fündigen doch hochwertige Musik im Bereich von Depressive Black Metal, Blackgaze und Post-Black Metal geboten. Ich selbst mag das ständige Kategorisieren nicht, aber im Groben geht’s wohl um benannte Einflüsse. Um die Band jedenfalls ein klein wenig zu supporten, und da ich bei Musik ein Liebhaber physikalischer Materie bin, reichte die digitale Version nun mal nicht aus.
Das kleine, auf 100 Stück limitierte, 4-seitige Digipak zeigt auf der Front eine karge Landschaft unter einem Sternenhimmel in diversen Graustufen. Optisch also recht minimalistisch, ebenso wie die Texte, die in kleiner Schriftgröße auf der ersten Innenseite (also ohne Booklet) abgebildet sind. Ehrlicherweise muss ich an dieser Stelle zugeben, dass die Lyrik nicht allzu ansprechend ist. Ich würde es als typische Herangehensweise im Depressive (Post) Black Metal bezeichnen. Die Themen wie Verluste, Ängste und negative Gefühle werden hier in erzählerischer Weise von einer Person behandelt.
Was ich aber mit Sicherheit sagen kann, ist die Tatsache, dass es echt Bock macht, die Scheibe wieder und wieder zu hören. Musikalisch sind die Songs wirklich gut ausgefeilt, beinhalten jede Menge guter Breaks, Riffs und Geschwindigkeitswechsel. Diese werden teils noch um kleinere melodische Piano-Einlagen und atmosphärische Parts ergänzt. Das Album wirkt dadurch irgendwie „frisch“ und abwechslungsreich – es ist nicht dermaßen platt, wie manch andere Veröffentlichung in diesem Genre und sticht somit aus der Masse hervor. Verwunderlich, dass das Debüt bisher noch nicht ausverkauft ist.
Um nicht noch mehr Worte zu verlieren, empfehle ich einfach mal direkt bei „Lost Moments“ oder „The Lump In My Throat“ reinzuhören!

It is unbelievable that this fact has not changed so far, though high-quality depressive black metal, blackgaze and post-black metal is offered. I don’t like that constant categorizing, but the music coincides probably with the named influences. To support the band a little bit, and since I’m a lover of physical items in music, the digital version was not enough for me.
The small, limited to 100 pieces, 4-sided digipak shows a barren landscape under a starry sky in various grayscale on the cover. It’s very minimalistic, just like the lyrics in a smaller font size on the first inside (it’s without booklet). Honestly, I have to admit, at this point, that the lyricism is not too appealing. I would call it a typical approach to depressive (post) black metal. The topics such as loss, fear and negative feelings are treated in a narrative way by one person.
What I can say with certainty, is the fact that it is really a plasure to listen to this album again and again. Musically the songs are really well done, they contain plenty of good breaks, riffings and changes in speed. These are partly complemented by minor melodic piano inlays and atmospheric parts. The album is somehow „fresh“ and varied – it is not as flat as some other publication in this genre and thus stands out from the crowd. It is surprising that the debut has not sold out yet.
In order not to lose more words, I recommend to listen to „Lost Moments“ or „The Lump In My Throat“ immediately!
